PC Virus’ True Definition

A PC virus is a small software program that spreads from one computer to another that disturbs computer operation. It may delete data on a computer, spread the virus to other PCs through an email program, or even remove everything you have on the hard disk.

By email attachments or instant messaging, computer viruses can spread. So, be aware and never open an email attachment if you do not know who sent the message. Viruses can be present in attachments of funny images, audio and video files, greeting cards, and the like.  Always be aware that viruses can spread through downloads on the Internet and can be contained within files or programs that you may download.  A software that is pirated can also catch a virus.

A worm is a PC code that spreads without a user’s cooperation. Most of the worms begin as email attachments that infect a certain PC the moment they are opened. The worm scans the infected web pages or address books that contain email addresses. Worms spread automatically through networks, or email messages.

A malicious software Trojan Horse is usually hidden inside other programs. They can penetrate a program and puts a code in the operating system that permits a hacker to access the infected PC.  They can also be spread by downloaded software, worms, other viruses.  Trojan Horses do not usually spread viruses by themselves.

This software program attempts to deceive you to make you think that your computer is infected by a virus.  It usually pushes you to buy or download a product that pretends to remove a virus. You can usually see names like Security, Shield, Antivirus, Fixer or Protection. These names make them seem legitimate. They usually run immediately right after you download them, or the next time your computer starts. Rogue Security Software may display legitimate and important Windows files as infections. It can also prevent applications from opening.

Here are 2 examples of Rogue Security Software pop-up messages:

“1.  Are you sure you want to navigate from this page?  Your computer is infected! They can cause data loss and file corruption and need to be treated as soon as possible. Press CANCEL to prevent it. Return to System Security and download it to secure your PC. Press OK to Continue or     Cancel     to stay on the current page.”

This message is malicious and if you encounter this kind of message, see to it that you do not buy or download the software.

  1. “Warning!  Your computer is infected!  This computer is infected by spyware and adware.”

Immediately when you receive a message like this, press ALT + F4 to close the dialog box. Do not click anything inside the dialog box. If the pop-up keeps coming up even you when you close the dialog box, that further indicates that the message is malicious.
